The School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences seeks outstanding candidates for a tenure-eligible faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor in Meat Science/Food Safety. This is a 9-month academic position and will be split between 70% research, 20% teaching, and 10% service.
Individuals committed to establishing and maintaining a nationally and internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program in food safety with emphasis on sustainable production and safety of meat and related products are sought. Areas of primary food safety expertise could include, but are not limited to, food science, food technology, food processing, food microbiology, meat science, meat safety, meat packaging, creation of processes to add and maintain value, and environmental sustainability of meat products. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with existing faculty members both on and off campus, and to increase the impact and visibility of the food safety program.
The University of Arizona houses a Federally inspected meat slaughter and processing facility. This facility will provide an absolutely valuable resource and opportunity for the successful candidate to conduct research, teaching and outreach activities. The University of Arizona has a food safety consortium where all faculty and staff interested in food safety from various units and colleges across campus come together to solve issues faced by Arizona agriculture and food production. The consortium promotes collaboration in research, teaching and outreach activities related to food safety.

Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a strong extramurally funded research program in food/meat safety with emphasis on sustainable production and safety of meat products; Collaborate with existing faculty members both on and off campus within the University of Arizona and other institutions; understand the research needs and collaborate with the food/meat industries in Arizona on research; play a key role in increasing the impact and visibility of the food safety program; and actively participate in the food safety consortium.
The position includes a significant appointment in undergraduate and graduate instruction in food/meat safety and production. It is expected that the successful candidate will teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate is expected to develop and deliver courses on food/meat safety and production for UA students, as well as students in institutions that lack these courses, and for industry personnel seeking professional development. One of the courses that the candidate in this position will have to teach includes Meat Animal Composition.
The new faculty member will also participate in outreach and contribute to departmental, college, and university service. The successful candidate will be expected to support the food/meat industry in Arizona and must be able to communicate effectively with prospective and current students, industry personnel, commodity groups, livestock producers, meat processors and the wider community.
The successful candidate will serve on Departmental and College Committees as assigned by the Director or the College Dean. The successful candidate will contribute to UA's commitment to achieving excellence through a diverse workforce and participate in departmental, college, and university affairs.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
* Demonstrated ability to independently develop and conduct research focused on food safety with emphasis on sustainable and safe production of meat and related products
* Demonstrated ability to teach college-level classes and/or to mentor students.
* Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students, faculty and staff
* PhD in food science, food safety, food technology, food microbiology, meat science, animal science, microbiology, nutrition, poultry science or another related field.
* Record of excellence in teaching or mentoring.
* Desire to develop and teach distance learning courses.
* Experience leading or participating in international research, education, or development projects.
